Khmer Pidan 'Story Scarf'
Regular price $460.00
This is a museum quality piece and one very similar hangs in a museum near San Diego in the United States. It is a beautiful Pidan - one-of-a-kind, very tightly woven and 100% golden Khmer silk.
A pidan is a highly respected textile. In Cambodia, one is traditionally hung above the statue of Buddha. Today Pidans are also used for special occasions. These are handwoven intricate ikat weaves decorated with images of elephants, birds, plants, nagas (serpents) or wats, apsaras (female spirit) and scenes from the life of Buddha. As an art form, the Pidan is enjoying a revival as Cambodians struggle to document and save weaving methods and patterns before they are lost along with the older generation of weavers.
